Oracle Database began back to the year of 1978 with Oracle version 1, a database written in the assembly language, and of 1979 with Oracle Version 2, known as the first commercially sold relational database. Some of the major milestones of Oracle Database are:
- Oracle 7 (1992): supports PL/SQL stored procedure and triggers.
- Oracle 8 (1997): supports object storage and multimedia applications.
- Oracle 8i (1999): aims to support internet applications with the Java Virtual Machine(VM) embedded.
- Oracle 9i (2001, 2002): supports RAC and XML storage.
- Oracle Database 10g (2003): enables the database to be grid computing ready and emphasis on easy to install, deploy and manage.
- Oracle Database 11g (2007/2009): introduced Exadata machine with Oracle Database 11g built in. Marked the start of the database engineered system.
- Oracle Database 12c (2013): supports multi-tenant database architecture to make the database ready for cloud deployments.
- Oracle Database 12cR2 (2016): support database sharing for distributed database management. In this release, Oracle chooses "Cloud First" strategy, which leads to providing in cloud release before the on-premises release.
Oracle Database is a now recognized leader in the database management system.
